Established in 2011, Edgefield Secondary seeks to nurture collaborative innovators and compassionate leaders who are future-ready through a values driven education and technology enhanced learning environment. Embracing the notion of “wisdom begins with wonder” , its curriculum is complemented by programmes that promote inquisitivity and creative and critical thinking, developing students into self-directed and lifelong learners. Above all, curated school experiences encapsulate the school’s aspirations for the students to cultivate a positive and growth mindset, resilience and the joy of learning while embracing diversity in an inclusive learning environment.
From thirst-quenching beverages to asian and western fare, the delightful 8-stall canteen is an inviting place where students look forward to visiting to recharge themselves for the day’s activities. Bustling with life during every recess and lunch break, students bond over meals with excited chatter and hearty laughter; a welcome respite from the challenges of school work.
Placed alongside the canteen, the pianos provide an avenue for relaxation as students play music pieces of their choice to their heart’s content, contributing to a lively ambience in the school compound. Amateurs are also drawn to this cosy corner where like-minded students learn to play the instrument using music apps such as Simply Piano.
The IE Studio is specially set up to offer students a dedicated space where they can put media skills such as newscasting into practice. Authentic learning tasks such as these not only offer students a simplified glimpse into media production but also the opportunity for beyond-the-classroom experiences where confidence can be developed as students engage in the active use of language in context.
The range can be found near the canteen and is a special area where students whose CCA is shooting do their training two to three times a week. The armoury is also located beside the range and is the secure storage area for keeping the air rifles and pistols used by the students in their training. A qualified coach instructs the students in their shooting practice. The range is out-of-bounds to other students when the training is taking place.
As part of the Indoor Sports Hall, the basketball court is located at the ground floor and is beside the canteen and the uniformed groups CCA rooms. This is where the boys and girls involved in basketball CCA do their training regularly. Students also enjoy the facility by playing ad-hoc games during recess and after school. PE lessons and uniformed groups training sessions are also carried out here.
The parade square is the open air area surrounded by blocks and the school field where the students gather every morning for flag raising before going up to their classes. This open air space is where the uniformed groups, such as NPCC, normally do their training and it is also the space where PE lessons are conducted. Students can also be found playing impromptu games here during their recess and lunch breaks.
The science labs are all located on the ground floor of the classroom block and each one has a special name such as Endothermic Lab, Exothermic Lab, etc. Students make use of these labs to conduct experiments related to their physics, chemistry and biology subjects under the guidance of their science teacher.
Largely filled with the bamboo plant, the Zen Garden offers students a place of serenity where students get to enjoy some quiet moments for reflection or calm. As much as it is a source of fresh air that rejuvenates, the garden is also a place of inspiration that uplifts the spirit as visitors draw strength from the resilience known of the bamboo plant.
This fixture of the school situated beside the classroom blocks and the parade square is incorporated with astro turf which makes it convenient and safe for students to use the facility even after rainfall as the surface is no longer water-logged and uneven. CCA students playing softball and students having PE lessons can be often found within this fenced-up compound enjoying the games they are playing.
Definitely one of the students’ favourites, the BBQ pits add to the liveliness and fun of school camps and events. In the midst of bonding with teachers and peers. students get to put their barbecue skills to the test while serving up mouth-watering food, filling the air with wafts of aromatic fragrance.

An obligatory feature in Edgefield student life is the Good News Cafe. Since the cafe’s establishment in 2011, it has been a constant spot for students and staff who want the convenience of quick and tasty food without the navigating through the canteen crowd. The cafe mainly caters grab-and-go food which allows students and staff to satiate their hunger while juggling their school schedule. The extensive menu encompasses speciality beverages, sandwiches, puff pastries, cookie, muffins, tarts and croissants, some of which are also baked fresh on site. There are also occasional monthly specials with new items on the menu to satisfy students. Located outside the School Hall and Staffroom, the cafe also a great place for students to unwind and catch up with each other.
The Epsilon Room is located on Level 2 of the classroom block and is designed as a learning space for students. The room is equipped with flexible furniture which allows for collaborative pedagogy and active learning. The mobile design of the tables and chairs allow students to cluster to engage in collaborative learning but also disperse for individual study or testing.
The Indoor Sports Hall is located on Level 3, above the basketball court. This flexible facility caters to a number of sports including volleyball, badminton, basketball, wushu and other indoor sports. The hall is often used for Physical Education (PE) lessons which train students’ physical fitness, mental agility and teamwork. In the afternoons, dedicated coaches use the facility to train students for Co-Curricular Activities (CCA).
The library might be a mundane place for some but in Edgefield, it is the best place for students to travel to different worlds as they explore the fictional universes contained and neatly catalogued on our school’s library shelves. Students are also able to pore over a curation of non-fiction books and deepen their knowledge on topics such as Food, Travel, Science, History, Music and Art. In addition, the library also features a cosy stage where students can put up performances for their peers. During the examination season, the library also provides a conducive and functional environment for students to do their independent revision.
In line with providing a rich, natural environment in the school where students can learn to preserve our biodiversity and be champions for environmental awareness and responsibility, a Hydroponics Garden has been set up on Level 3. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without soil. In a hydroponic system, nutrients and supplements are dissolved into water, creating a nutrient solution. The nutrient solution is delivered to plant roots and then captured and recirculated through the system. Students pick up horticultural skills at the Hydroponics Garden as part of their Sustainable Future Advocates training.
The Edge is a brand new facility in the school that is designed as a student hub. It is a dynamic and versatile space that allows Edgefield students to develop their innovation and entrepreneurial skills, while receiving guidance and support to grow into confident and future-ready leaders. The Edge features modular spaces designed to facilitate group and project discussions but also retains the flexibility to be transformed into a larger space capable of hosting events to an audience of up to 80 people. There is also a student-run cafe in the hub to support Growing the Entrepreneurial Mindset (G.E.M) initiatives and provide a space for Element of Business Skills (EBS) students to enhance their learning. In addition, an Education and Career Guidance (ECG) room has been incorporated into the hub to provide ECG services to students such as private counselling sessions.
Students’ learning primarily occurs in the 34 classrooms which are spread across three classroom blocks. Each classroom can accommodate up to approximately 40 students. To facilitate Edgefield Secondary School’s Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) Programme as well as MOE’s Personal Digital Learning Programme (PDLP), each classroom is also equipped with an Apple TV. This device enables the screen display of the iPad which allows teachers and students to seamlessly integrate the use of the iPad into teaching and learning. Screen casting is no longer limited to the teacher’s laptop as in conventional classrooms. Instead, from the convenience of their seats, students are able to wirelessly share their work with their peers and teachers for instant feedback and collaboration. To provide students with equal access to such IT affordances, teachers also have the option of utilising iPad mobile carts in classes with lower personal ownership rates of iPads.
